Épisode Captures S01E13 - Dark Angel (USA) Saison 1

L'épisode commence par le fait que Zack soit prisonnier de Manticore. Il est sur une table d'opération et on voit qu'un médecin à la demande de Lydecker lui met des sérums pour le faire dire la vérité. Mais cela ne fontionne pas ! Le militaire fait alors croire que Max vient chercher son frère ce qui n'est pas le cas.

Mais alors que celle-ci va travailler à Jam Pony, Original Cindy arrive avec deux cadis d'affaires. Elle s'est fait jeté dehors de chez elle. Expliquant cela à Max, la jeune femme accepte que son amie vienne emménager chez elle le midi. La jeune femme se prépare alors pour aller au dîner de Logan.

Pendant se temps à Manticore, Zack se sauve parce que le médecin l'a rendu "mort " pour un petit moment. On peut voir alors qu'on enterre le X5. La nuit passante, Max part pour son rendez-vous, alors que son frère se réveille dans le cerceuil. Il se sauve puis il croise le medecin dans sa voiture. Celui-ci fait le bon samaritain alors qu'il a eu l'ordre de le lui faire croire. Des militaires viennent les attaquer, Zack se sauve et voila qu'il prévient Max à une cabine téléphonique.

La jeune femme qui est chez Logan ne le sait pas encore, mais son frère a appelé chez elle. Original Cindy répond et lui dit d'appeler chez Logan. Le couple qui allait manger vient de voir que le poulet n'a pas été cuit vu que le four ne fut pas allumé. Le téléphone sonne, Max répond puis elle va chercher son frère avant que Logan lui dise de ne pas y aller. La jeune femme lui répond que ce n'est pas parce qu'il marche qu'elle ne peut pas lui botter les fesses !

Partant pour aller chercher son frère, elle le retrouve dans une grotte. Ils discutent sur le fait qu'il n'est pas parlé de ses frères et soeurs. Alors que Lydecker est en compagnie de medécin et d'un autre homme dans un van. Ils écoutent la conversation sans que Zack sache qu'il ait un émetteur.

Max va voir dehors s'il n'y a pas de danger, puis revenant de sa petite promenade. Elle revient le chercher puis lui disant qu'il y a des hommes. La jeune femme l'emmène puis, Zack enlève l'émetteur, et les deux jeunes gens se retrouvent chez Logan. Ils lançent un appel pour sauver ses frères et soeurs à l'aide du Veilleur. Les autres se sauvent sauf Tinga qui a demandé de l'aide à Zack.

Elle vit à Portland et elle travaille dans une pâtisserie. Allant à sa rescousse, Zack et Max arrive à temps pour la sauver. Les trois jeunes gens prirent la voiture de Logan pour rentrer. Plus loin, Zack vole une voiture et part avec Tinga pour la frontière avec le Canada.

A MANTICORE
(Zack est torturé. Un médecin à côté de lui regarde son fichier puis Lydecker entre dans la pièce.)

Lydecker : Quand vous voulez, docteur.
Docteur : Je dois m'y opposer. Il est trop tôt pour lui administrer un sérum de vérité. Son organisme est fragilisé par ce qu'il a subi.

(Lydecker s'avance vers Docteur et lui prend le dossier.)
Lydecker : Je prends note de votre réserve. Allons-y maintenant.
Docteur : Si vous m'accordiez un jour ou deux pour stabiliser son état.

(Lydecker pose brutalement le dossier.)
Lydecker : Mais vous ne comprenez pas ce qui est en jeu! Il sait où se trouvent les autres X5, il garde ces informations au plus profond de son être. Et je vais les lui soutirer.
Docteur : Oui, mais s'il meurt, il ne vous dira rien.
Lydecker : Je cours le risque.

(Lydecker se recule pour observer les événements suivants.)
Lydecker : Allez-y. Faites-le ou je trouverais un médecin plus coopératif!

(Docteur injecte le sérum dans le bras de Zack et attend les effets. Une machine mesure son activité cérébrale. Zack a des convulsions puis se calme. Docteur place au-dessus de son oeil droit un laser. Lydecker s'approche.)
Lydecker : Où sont-ils Zack? Où est Max? Dis-moi où ils sont et tu ne souffriras plus.

DANS LA CELLULE DE ZACK
(Zack a un flash-back, il revoie les scènes d'entraînement puis la mort d'un de ses frères lors de l'évasion de 2009. Soudain, il se réveille dans une cellule et voit quelqu'un attaquer le garde. C'est Max.)

Max : Zack.

(Max prend les clefs du garde et ouvre la cellule de Zack.)
Zack : Tu es revenue. Mais qu'est-ce...Co... Comment...
Max : Chhuuttt, je t'expliquerais. Il faut qu'on sorte d'ici!
Zack : Max tu n'aurais pas du venir.
Max : Après ce que tu as fait pour moi? Tu croyais que j'allais te laisser tomber? Tu auras assez de force pour arriver au grillage d'enceinte?
Zack : Si j'y arrive pas, repart sans moi.

(Ils voient des ombres et se cachent dans une autre pièce.)
Max : La relève ne devrait plus tarder. On en profitera pour filer. Est-ce qu'ils t'ont fait parler Zack? De moi ou des autres?
Zack : Non.
Max : Parce que s'ils ont appris comment nous retrouver.
Zack (la coupant) : Je ne leurs ai rien dit.
Max : Je devrais les contacter pour les avertir au plus vite.
Zack : Je leurs ai rien dit!
Max (d'une voix ferme) : Tu es sûr?

(Zack regarde Max avec un air d'incompréhension.)
Max : Mais qu'est-ce qu'il y a Zack?
Zack : J'en sais rien. C'est à toi de me le dire.

(Soudain Zack empoigne Max à la gorge.)
Zack : Qui t'envoie Max?
Max : Zack!
Zack : Qui êtes-vous?
Max : Zack! Zack!

(Une lumière s'allume, deux gardes entrent en courant et le frappent. Le docteur entre à son tour.)
Docteur : Arrêtez, bon sang! Vous allez le tuer! Ça m'étonnerait qu'il s'en sorte indemne.

(Lydecker entre.)
Zack : Je ne vous dirais rien! Vous m'entendez! Jamais Lydecker.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN
(Bling nettoie les appareils de musculation. Max entre avec des sacs à provision.)
Max : Salut!
Bling : Hey Max!
Max : Regarde ça!

(Elle sort un poulet.)
Bling : J'en ai pas vu depuis des siècles.
Max : Je l'ai eu au marché des Fermiers. Je crois que Logan sera ravi de nous faire un de ses miracles culinaires avec ce volatile. Il est là?
Bling : Il est sorti marcher.
Max : Il marche?
Bling : Il se promène sur la plage.

(Logan est sur le sable et bouge ses orteils. Max arrive.)
Max : Hey! Zone interdite, tu ne sais pas lire?
Logan : Enlève tes chaussures et viens me rejoindre.
Max : En rentrant à la maison tu trouveras une surprise. Un vrai poulet.
Logan : Huh, wow. Je vois un poulet rôti à l'horizon arrosé d'une bouteille de "Nuit St George" datant d'avant l'Impulsion. Ha et disons huit heures?
Max : J'espérais bien que tu dirais ça.
Logan : C'est merveilleux, non? C'est curieux, c'est la première fois depuis longtemps... Je crois qu'on peut tout accomplir, qu'il n'y a en réalité aucune limite.

(Max regarde les pieds de Logan baignant dans la mer.)
Max : Tu n'as pas froid?
Logan : Je suis gelé! Mais c'est si bon.

(Logan lui tend la main pour qu'elle le rejoigne mais elle refuse. Il prend sa canne et la tire vers lui.)
Logan : Approche.

(Un vigidrone arrive.)
Vigidrone : Zone interdite. Je répète : zone interdite.

(Max se retourne.)
Max : Je déteste ces engins.
Logan : Ouais. Il faut y aller.
Max : Hey ouais.

(Max prend son sac et son vélo pour aller travailler.)
Logan : Alors à ce soir.
Max : Huit heures?
Logan : Oui.
Max : Je dois aller travailler.
Logan : Oui. Je dois rentrer.
Max : Au revoir.
Logan : Au revoir.

(Ils commencent à partir dans une direction opposée, mais rebroussent chemin.)
Max et Logan (en même temps) : Je me suis trompé(e).

A JAM PONY
(Normal fait des reproches à un coursier.)

Normal : Combien de fois faudra-t-il vous dire que sans signature, je ne vous paye pas à la course?
Herbal : Le 2-25 Carrington.
Normal : Signature?
Herbal : Elle est là.
Normal : Robert Marley. Je préfère ça.

(Sketchy et Original Cindy arrivent avec les affaires de cette dernière, car elle a été expulsée de son appartement.)
Sketchy : C'est limite injuste.
Original Cindy : Non, c'est injuste. Mais qu'est-ce qu'Original Cindy pouvait faire d'autre? Ils m'ont coupé mon électricité, mon eau et mon chauffage.
Normal : Vous êtes en retard.
Original Cindy : Vous me lâchez ou je vous mets la tête en 3D façon Alien!
Sketchy : Hey, laissez-la tranquille Normal! Elle crise, elle s'est fait virer de son appart!
Max : Désolée pour toi. Je ne peux pas faire autrement que de me sentir coupable.
Original Cindy : C'est pas ta faute. Avec cette meute de Rambo de la mort décidée à te refroidir.
Max : J'arrive pas à croire qu'ils aient tué ton proprio.
Original Cindy : Moi non plus. Attend, je ne le regrette pas comme logeur, c'était un fennec, il en foutait pas une râle. J'suis pas vénère qu'ils aient voulu m'expulser. C'est moi qui aie fait entrer le loup.
Max : D'abord tu perds ton job et ton appart et tout ça à cause de moi.
Original Cindy : Ce job était pourri et l'appart était miteux, Original Cindy doit rester forte et doit faire face à l'adversité.
Max : Et si tu venais habiter chez moi?
Original Cindy : C'est gentil mais je ne veux pas m'imposer.
Max : Tu rigoles! Kendra partage le nid d'amour avec son flic adoré. Y'a de la place à revendre.
Original Cindy : T'en es sûre?
Max : Tu emménages à l'heure du déjeuner.
Original Cindy : J'ai une question, les grognasses de l'autre jour te cherchent encore?
Max : Après la raclée qu'ils ont pris?
Original Cindy : Et la bande de blaireaux en hélico noir qui t'as à l'oeil?
Max : Non, les choses sont nettement cool de ce côté-là.
Original Cindy : D'accord, je m'installe.
Max : Cool! À tout à l'heure.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN
(Max et Logan sortent de la douche et cherchent de quoi se mettre. Ils se préparent parallèlement pour la soirée à venir.)

Bling : Est-ce-que ça va?
Logan : Oui, pourquoi?
Bling : Tu as l'air d'un chien qui aurait perdu son os.

APPARTEMENT DE MAX

Max : Non, j'essaie de trouver un truc à mettre.
Original Cindy : Où tu sors exactement?
Max : Je vais chez Logan.
Original Cindy : Oh! Un rendez-vous galant!

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN

Logan : Ca n'a rien à voir. Elle vient simplement dîner.

(Logan se retourne et remarque l'air moqueur de Bling.)
Logan : Quoi? On dîne très souvent ensemble.
Bling : Oui mais c'est différent aujourd'hui. Le fusil est chargé. Si tu vois ce que je veux dire...

APPARTEMENT DE MAX
Max : Non, je ne vois pas ce que tu veux dire.
Original Cindy : J'ai bien vu la façon dont vous vous regardez. Vu qu'il n'a plus son handicap, vous allez pouvoir donner libre cours à vos envies.
Max : C'est pas ce que tu crois de toute façon.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN

Logan : Ce n'est certainement pas un fauteuil roulant qui m'aurait arrêté si j'en avais eu vraiment envie.
Bling : Oh oui, c'est sûr.

APPARTEMENT DE MAX
Original Cindy : Peut importe que l'obstacle qui vous empêchait d'aller plus loin ait été physique ou psychologique. L'avenir est à vous.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN

Logan : Et où veux-tu en venir?
Bling : C'est une toute autre histoire. Et c'est pour ça que tu es si nerveux?
Logan : Je ne suis pas nerveux.

(Logan se blesse en coupant des tomates ce qui montre qu'il est réellement nerveux.)

APPARTEMENT DE MAX
Original Cindy : Mouais, c'est ça. Et c'est une raison de plus pour laquelle je me réjouis d'être lesbienne. On n'est pas du genre à faire autant de chichi, deux rendez-vous suffisent pour qu'on vive ensemble.
Max : C'est pas autre chose que deux bons amis qui se retrouvent pour dîner.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN

Logan : Allez s'imaginer autre chose n'aurait pour résultat que de détruire une grande amitié.
Bling : Je n'en pense pas moins. Et peu importe ce que tu diras, je vous laisse.

APPARTEMENT DE MAX

Original Cindy : Si tu ne rentres pas cette nuit, sois gentille de téléphoner, que je ne m'inquiète pas.

A MANTICORE
(Zack est allongé sur une table apparemment mort, Docteur le recouvre d'un drap. Plusieurs hommes l'enterrent dans un cimetière pour X. La nuit tombe, soudain Zack se réveille et sort de son cercueil. Il rencontre Docteur qui s'est occupé de lui.)

Docteur : Est-ce-que ça va?

(Zack acquiesce d'un mouvement de tête.)
Docteur : Je suis désolé, c'était la seule façon de vous sortir de là. Tenez, enfilez ça.

(Le docteur lui tend de nouveaux habits.)
Zack : Pourquoi vous voulez m'aider?
Docteur : Pour pouvoir un jour me regarder en face.

(Zack monte dans la voiture et s'habille pendant le trajet.)
Docteur : Je vous conduis à la frontière et là ce sera à vous de jouer.

(Le docteur lui tend de l'argent, Zack le regarde avec un air méfiant.)
Docteur : Ce n'est que de l'argent!

(Soudain ils sont attaqués et la voiture va s'écraser sur le bas-côté. Zack s'échappe de la voiture.)
Docteur : Courez! Courez!
Garde : Il est là! Suivez-le!

(Les gardes tirent sur le docteur qui s'effondre.)
Docteur : Courez!
Garde : Notre cible est à pied, il se dirige au Sud-Est sur? point 7.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN
(Logan allume une bougie. La sonnette retentie, il pose sa canne et va ouvrir à Max.)
Max : Bonsoir.
Logan : Bonsoir. Et bien entre.

DANS UNE RUE
(Zack est à une cabine téléphonique. Original Cindy installe un poster chez Max, le téléphone sonne.)

Original Cindy : Ouais?
Zack : Max?
Original Cindy : Non, qui-est-ce?

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN

(Max et Logan sont devant une bouteille de vin et ne savent pas quoi dire.)
Max et Logan (en même temps) : Alors... Alors...
Logan : Le dîner...

(Max boit rapidement un verre de vin, visiblement nerveuse.)
Logan : Oh non!
Max : Poulet tartare.
Logan : C'était de la grande cuisine!

(Le téléphone sonne.)
Logan : Ca t'ennuie de décrocher?
Max : Non. Remet-le au four.
Logan : Oh oui.
Max : Allô?
Zack : Max?
Max : Zack?
Zack : J'ai besoin de toi.

(Max raccroche et se retourne.)
Max : Il est caché dans la forêt près de Manticore. Je dois y aller avant qu'ils le trouvent.
Logan : Lydecker doit ratisser cette forêt avec toute une armée.
Max : Je dois y aller Logan. Je lui dois la vie.

(Max ouvre la porte d'entrée mais Logan l'en empêche.)
Logan : Ok. Admettons que tu passes les barrages sans te faire repérer, que tu parviennes à le retrouver, vous ne passerez jamais entre les mailles de leurs filets et vous serez faits prisonniers.
Max : On l'a déjà fait et on avait que neuf ans.

(Elle ouvre la porte mais Logan l'en empêche encore une fois.)
Logan : Et si on t'avait tendu un piège? Et que Zack coopère avec eux?
Max : Zack, un traître? Tu ne dirais pas ça si tu le connaissais!

(Elle essaye en vain d'ouvrir la porte.)
Logan : Il n'est pas question que je te laisse partir.
Max : Logan, écoute-moi bien. Je suis ravie que tu ne sois plus cloué dans ton fauteuil mais soyons réaliste, je peux encore te botter le derrière!

(Elle ouvre la porte et Logan la laisse partir avec colère et découragement. Max se cache dans un camion avec sa moto sans être vue à la frontière de la zone 16. A un barrage elle s'échappe en direction de la forêt pour retrouver Zack. Après avoir caché sa moto, elle contourne plusieurs gardes et entre dans une grotte.)

DANS LA FORET

Max : Zack? Zack?

(Soudain Zack la maintient par la gorge.)
Max : Zack, c'est moi!
Zack : Qu'est ce que tu fais ici?
Max : Arrête, tu m'étrangles.
Zack : C'est lui qui t'envoie?
Max : Tu dis n'importe quoi! C'est toi qui m'as appelé!
Zack : Vous m'avez tendu un piège!
Max : J'ai pas l'intention de te trahir! Lydecker passe la forêt au peigne fin, j'viens te sortir de là!
Zack : Il s'est servi de toi comme appât, mais il va le regretter. Tu obéis à ses ordres et tu menaces notre survie.
Max : Zack!

(Max le met à terre.)
Max : Tu bouges plus!
Zack : Je l'aurais juré. Il se sert de toi, je l'avais compris!
Max : Si c'était vrai, j'aurais déjà appelé une unité pour te livrer à Lydecker. Mais c'est faux, tu entends! Tu m'as demandé de l'aide et c'est pour ça que je suis venue.
Zack (pleurant) : Max!
Max : Chhuutt! Ne t'inquiète pas ça va aller. On va rester cachés dans cette grotte et on s'en ira à la nuit tombée? Ils t'ont torturé?
Zack : Je leurs ai parlé de personne... ni de toi... ni des autres, Max... je te le jure!
Max : S'ils ont utilisé du sérum de vérité, on n'a plus aucune certitude.
Zack : J'suis sûr de n'avoir trahi personne parce que je sais plus rien. Je me suis forcé à effacer ces souvenirs comme ils nous ont appris à le faire.

(Max a un flash-back.)
Lydecker : Personne ne peut résister indéfiniment à la torture. Vous y compris. Un esprit affaiblit est extrêmement maniable. Vous révèlerez ce que vous savez.

(La jeune Max récite des chiffres les uns à la suite des autres.)
La jeune Max : 4-5-9-7-4-2-3-5-6-9-4...
Lydecker : Vos souvenirs peuvent être enterrés, obscurcis...
La jeune Max : 7-3-7-1-1-9...
Lydecker : Si vous avez la volonté d'apprendre à oublier ce que vous savez, votre nom, votre code-barre...
La jeune Max : 5-4-9-7-4-2-3-5-6-9-4...
Lydecker : En nourrissant délibérément vos souvenirs de fausses informations. Vous allez embrouiller vos idées à tel point que vous serez dans l'impossibilité de révéler la vérité.(S'adressant à la jeune Max et montrant un code-barre) Est-ce-que c'est votre code-barre, oui ou non? Répondez-moi!
Zack : Je me suis contraint à oublier. Je l'ai fait pour vous protéger. Pour vous protéger tous.
Max : Ça va aller, c'est fini.
Zack : Oh, non! C'est pas fini ... J'étais le seul à savoir! Le seul à savoir! Oh, il faut que je me souvienne pour vous protéger, tu comprends?
Max : Tu y arriveras. Tu m'aurais appelé si tu avais oublié mon numéro?
Zack : C'est pas la même chose.
Max : Si. Ce n'est qu'une question de volonté.
Zack : Non, c'est différent, et toi c'... Comment t'aurais-je oubliée? Alors que je te connais par coeur . C'est irréel.

(Ils entendent le bruit d'un hélicoptère.)
Max : Il faut que j'aille voir si on est toujours en sécurité, ne bouge pas.

(Zack a des flashbacks, il se remémore sa torture, ses entraînements, l'évasion de 2009, les moments qu'il a passé avec Max et lorsque Brin est enlevé par Lydecker. Soudain il se réveille.)
Max : C'est moi.
Zack : Ça fait des siècles que j'ai pas pu baisser ma garde assez longtemps pour pouvoir dormir. Pour toi c'est plutôt secondaire, tu n'as jamais beaucoup dormi.
Max : Jondy non plus. Je parie qu'on a de l'ADN de requin ou un truc comme ça, on a jamais envie de dormir.
Zack : Ce qui expliquerait qu'elle aime travailler la nuit, dans un bar, à Portland. Non, attend, ça c'est Tinga, Jondy vit à San Franscisco.
Max : Continue.
Zack : Elle habite à côté du Golden Gate.
Max : Reviens sur Tinga! Tu dis qu'elle vit à Portland?
Zack : Oui, elle travaille dans une boulangerie, si tu voyais ses cheveux, ils sont très longs, on dirait qu'elle les a toujours laissés pousser.
Max : Et Zane? Tu sais où il vit?
Zack : À Los Angeles. Il est mécanicien. Et il a un gros chien, un berger allemand qui a l'air féroce, un peu comme les molosses qu'on avait à Manticore, mais celui-là il est gentil.
Max : C'est bien, continue comme ça.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN
(Logan écoute son portable.)

Voix : L'abonné que vous demandez est hors des limites du réseau, merci de rappeler.
Bling : Elle n'est toujours pas joignable?
Logan : Non.
Bling : Je fais un tour au marché, tu veux quelque chose?
Logan : Non merci.

(Logan se déplace et soudain il a des convulsions, il manque de tomber à terre.)

DANS LA FORET

Max : Tu ne m'as pas parlé de Krit, qu'est ce qu'il devient?
Zack : Krit? J'en sais rien.
Max : C'est pas grave.
Zack : J'arrive pas à m'en souvenir.
Max : Ca fait rien, ça te reviendra.
Zack : J'ai revu Brin à Manticore.
Max : Il faudra qu'on la sorte très bientôt toi et moi. Tu devrais dormir un peu, il fera nuit dans quelques heures.
Zack : Merci Max, pour avoir répondu à mon appel.
Max : C'était la moindre des choses après ce que tu as fait pour moi.
Zack : Lydecker a essayé de me faire croire que tu étais entrée à Manticore pour me sauver.
Max : Comment s'y est-il pris? Pour te faire croire ça?
Zack : Ils ont dû m'injecter je ne sais quelle drogue et m'ont envoyé quelqu'un qui s"est fait passer pour toi. Ca m'a plongé dans une sacrée confusion... je suis fatigué.
Max : Ça va aller, dort. Je vais aller jusqu'à la route, il y a une station service un peu plus loin, je vais chercher de quoi manger. Si je ne suis pas revenue au coucher du soleil, part sans moi. Retrouve les autres.

(Max court vers la station service et voit un homme avec une oreillette.)
Homme : Je suis toujours en position. Elle n'est pas encore passée.

(Elle voit des gardes de chaque côté et retourne chercher Zack. Ils sortent sans bruit.)
Lydecker : Vous l'avez vue passer?
Garde : Négatif.
Docteur : Qu'est ce qu'il fera si elle ne le rejoint pas?
Lydecker : Ce qu'il devrait faire... En conclure qu'elle a été capturée et partir seul retrouver les autres. Un problème avec la radio?
Sandoval : J'ai de la friture mais la puce est très bien fixée, le signal GPS est clair. Il se déplace.
Lydecker (à l'homme à l'oreillette) : Elle s'est montrée?
Homme : Négatif.
Lydecker : Il fait trop de détours, ce n'est pas normal. A toutes les unités, ici le commandement, nous allons intervenir. Il se dirige vers le sud en suivant le cours de la rivière.

(Max et Zack longent la rivière ainsi que des gardes de Lydecker.)
Sandoval : Il s'est arrêté.
Lydecker : Equipe Delta, ici Contrôle. Notre cible est au sud, point 4, 175 degrés.
Garde : Ranger Contrôle, on passe à l'action.
Voix : Contrôle, ici unité Delta. Nous sommes sur place. Ancun signe d'eux, à vous.
Lydecker : Mais c'est impossible! Vous êtes exactement à l'endroit où il devrait être.
Garde : Attendez! Son émetteur!
Lydecker : Répétez?
Garde : Il s'est arraché la puce du cuir chevelu et il nous a envoyés sur une fausse piste.

(Max enlève les branches qui cachaient sa moto.)
Zack : Max! Si depuis le début ils ont écouté nos conversations!
Max : Ils ont entendu tout ce que tu m'as dit sur les autres.
Zack : Il faut qu'on les avertisse!
Max : Commençons par nous tirer d'ici!

APPARTEMENT LOGAN

Max : C'était un piège. Lydecker a facilité son évasion pour pouvoir le suivre.
Zack : Je me suis fait avoir! J'ai mis tous les autres en danger!
Logan : Mais comment? Expliquez-moi.
Zack : J'ai pas su me taire! Je portais un micro.
Logan : On connaît l'histoire.

(Lydecker et Docteur écoutent les propos de Zack sur les autres X5.)
Lydecker : Il devra les avertir. Et leurs apprendre que leur sécurité est menacée. Nous devons nous mettre au travail, le plus rapidement possible.

(Zack et Max sont assis sur un canapé.)
Max : Tu as dit que Tinga travaillait dans une boulangerie à Portland, laquelle?
Zack : J'en sais rien.
Max : Parle-moi de Zane. Où travaille-t-il? Comment restais-tu en contact avec eux?
Zack : On avait un numéro. Ils me laissaient leurs messages dans une boite vocale qu'ils utilisaient en cas de besoin.
Max : Et si toi tu voulais les joindre?
Zack : Je téléphonais.
Max : Jondy... Tu lui as téléphoné? Quel est son numéro?
Zack : Je ne m'en souviens pas.
Max : Réfléchis Zack. C'est sa vie qui est en jeu!

(Max essaye de le réconforter mais il repousse son bras brutalement.)
Zack : Parce-que tu crois que je n'en suis pas conscient?
Logan : Laisse-lui un peu de temps.
Max : Nous n'en avons pas, il est peut-être même déjà trop tard pour les sauver!

(Logan s'assoit à côté d'elle.)
Max : Désolée, tu n'y es pour rien. On doit les avertir et on doit trouver un moyen de le faire.
Logan : J'ai peut-être une idée.

(Normal regarde la télé.)

Normal (à la télé) : Ouais, c'est ça! Va donc transgenre! Mais arrêtez-le, vous voyez bien que c'est un dépravé! Et on montre pas ses fesses à un officier de police, tarlouze!

(Soudain l'écran devient noir et Le Veilleur apparaît.)

(Un mécanicien répare une voiture.)

Le mécanicien : Ce sera vite fait. Passe-moi la clef de douze, tu veux.
Le Veilleur : Je répète...
Mécanicien : Zane?
Le Veilleur : ... vous n'êtes plus en sécurité où vous êtes, vous savez quoi faire.
Mécanicien : Zane?

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN

Logan : Ce message sera diffusé toutes les heures, à l'heure juste tant que vous n'aurez pas donné signe de vie. On a plus qu'à attendre leurs appels sur la boite vocale.
Max : le Veilleur s'est mis à dos un nouvel ennemi.
Logan : Ça tombe bien, je commençais à me rouiller.

PLANQUE DE LYDECKER ET DE SANDOVAL
Sandoval : Ce petit Zorro commence à devenir gênant, trop malin.
Lydecker : Ouais, et la question est : pour quelle raison donne-t-il un coup de main à mes enfants?
Sandoval : Aucune idée. Il s'en tient d'habitude à des dénonciations.
Lydecker : Quand ils seront pris, je veux que vous trouviez qui est ce clown, Sandoval.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN
Zack : Zane, Sil et Krit ont téléphoné et ils ont plié bagages.
Max : Il ne reste que Tinga et Jondy.
Zack : Tu crois que je n'ai pas parlé des autres quand Lydecker écoutait?
Max : Non, Zack. Je m'en serais souvenue. Qu'est-ce qui fait que je n'ai pas le téléphone de ta boîte aux lettres? Je pourrais avoir besoin de te joindre.
Zack : Tu sais bien pourquoi.
Max : Je suis désobéissante et je refuse de jouer au petit soldat?
Zack : C'est presque ça.
Max : Alors je ne serai pas invitée à la prochaine réunion des X-5.
Zack : Tu es trop laxiste Max. Je courrais un risque en te le donnant, si tu te faisais coincer, Lydecker te le soutirait.
Max : Je suis irresponsable et tu n'as pas confiance, c'est très clair.
Zack : Si tu veux être membre du groupe que je dirige, il est encore temps. Mais la première étape sera de quitter Seattle.

(Max le regarde sans répondre.)
Zack : J'en étais certain, surtout avec ce qui t'arrive.
Max : Je ne vois pas de quoi tu parles.
Zack : Je parle du miraculé, Monsieur Le Veilleur.

PLANQUE DE LYDECKER ET DE SANDOVAL
(Lydecker regarde les photos de chaque X5.)

Sandoval : On sait où est la fille de Portland.
Lydecker : Bien. Qu'on m'envoie un hélicoptère avec deux hommes armés, je me charge personnellement de Tinga.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN

Zack : J'ai reçu un message de Tinga. Lydecker l'a repérée, elle a besoin d'aide.

(Tinga est poursuivie par Lydecker.)
Lydecker : Vous en êtes où?
Garde : Elle a été vue dans ce quartier. J'ai bouclé le périmètre et j'ai des hommes postés tous les cinquante mètres. Elle est là, quelque part, c'est sûr.
Lydecker : Vous savez de quoi elle a l'air?
Garde : On a agrandi une photo qu'avait son employeur.
Lydecker : Quadrillez la zone méthodiquement et n'utilisez que vos matraques électriques, je la veux vivante.

(Tinga est cachée.)
Tinga : Ah bon sang Zack, où es-tu?
Garde : Vous avez vu cette fille?

(Un homme fait un mouvement de tête négatif.)
Garde : Vous l'avez vue?
Homme : Non, non monsieur.
Garde : Elle est passée par-là?

(Les gardes vérifient toutes les caravanes vides.)
Garde : Rien à signaler, on continue.

(Soudain un garde entre dans une des caravanes et la trouve.)
Garde : Elle est ici! Elle se dirige vers l'ouest.
Lydecker : Unité Delta, convergez vers la cible. Unité Alpha resserrez le cordon de sécurité.
Garde : Ici unité Alpha, opération en cours.

(Tinga contourne les unités, elle frappe deux gardes qu'elle rencontre.)
Garde : Unité Delta à commandement.
Lydecker : J'écoute.
Garde : Cible en vue, nous passons à l'attaque.
Lydecker : Bien reçu. N'oubliez pas, je la veux vivante.

(Les gardes entourent Tinga puis soudain Max et Zack arrivent. Une bagarre s'en suit, tous les gardes sont mis KO. Les trois transgéniques repartent vers la voiture de Logan qui arrive en trombe et s'enfuient. Zack essaye de voler une voiture.)
Logan : Chez vous, le vol est une seconde nature?
Zack ( à Tinga ) : Vas-y. Y a assez d'essence?
Tinga : C'est plein aux trois quarts, on a de quoi aller au Canada sans refaire le plein.
Zack ( à Max ) : C'est pas la peine que j'insiste? ( à Tinga ) En route.

(Tinga regarde Zack avec étonnement.)
Tinga (à Max) : Tu ne viens pas avec nous?
Zack : Elle retourne à Seattle.
Tinga (à Max) : Pourquoi tu ne viens pas?
Zack : Laisse tomber.
Tinga (à Max) : Lydecker!
Zack (la coupant) : Je t'ai dit de laisser tomber Tinga.
Tinga : Surtout reste sur tes gardes petite soeur.
Max : Toi aussi.
Zack (à Max) : Je te remercie.
Max : Je crois qu'après, on est quitte.
Zack : Je crois oui. J'espère qu'un miracle en appel un autre, autrement tu ne réussiras pas à échapper à Lydecker.

(Lydecker rencontre McGinnis.)
Lydecker : Toujours fumeur?
McGinnis : Vous avez perdu Zack.
Lydecker : Ca faisait partie des risques. Ce qu'on a appris sur les autres, compense largement cette perte.
McGinnis : Si vous le dites.
Lydecker : Ils étaient cachés, on les a forcés à sortir de leur trou. Maintenant ils sont en fuite et personne ne peut disparaître sans laisser de traces, pas même mes enfants.
McGinnis : La commission exige que cette situation critique soit résolue définitivement Deck, vous pouvez donc mettre en oeuvre tous les moyens que vous jugerez efficaces.
Lydecker : Dois-je comprendre que cela inclus l'intervention du bataillon de la mort?
McGinnis : Si cela devient nécessaire.
Lydecker : Je croyais qu'il fallait les reprendre vivants!
McGinnis : Ils préconisent une solution plus radicale!
Lydecker : Et je suis donc obligé d'en référer en haut lieu?
McGinnis : Ça ne sera pas utile. Elle a signé les directives. Et elle m'a demandé de vous relayer ses instructions, si ça vous pose un problème d'exécuter ses ordres. Quelqu'un de moins réticent s'en chargera.
Lydecker : Non, ça ne sera pas nécessaire.
McGinnis : Je ne l'envisageai même pas.

APPARTEMENT DE LOGAN
(Logan et Max sont dans la cuisine.)

Max : C'est drôle, elle n'a absolument pas changé. J'aurais bien aimé passer plus de temps avec elle, savoir ce qu'elle a traversé, comment elle voit la vie.
Logan : Vous pourrez peut-être vous revoir quand les choses se seront calmées.
Max : Comment?
Logan : J'ai sa boîte vocale. Zack a téléphoné, tu te souviens?
Max : Oh! J'arrive pas à le croire! Laisser des indices, c'est pourtant pas son genre.
Logan : Tu crois ça?
Max : Merci, y'a de quoi dîner?
Logan : Jette un oeil dans le frigo.

(Logan se lève mais ne sent plus ses jambes.)
Max : Nous avons un demi-poulet rôti, des feuilles vertes que je qualifierais de légumes et une purée de pommes de terre aussi. Alors on se le fait ce dîner et cette fois je resterais bien sage jusqu'au dessert.
Logan (mal à l'aise) : Je t'inviterai un autre soir, j'ai beaucoup de travail.
Max : Oh, très drôle!
Logan : Tu peux l'emporter si tu veux.
Max (déçue) : Ça ira, tu m'as coupé l'appétit.
Logan : Désolé, bonne nuit.

(Max part avec colère. Logan essaye de marcher mais sans succès. Max est à une cabine téléphonique.)

Max (commentaire) : Ca ne devrait pas m'étonner. En fait c'est bien ce que je disais, Zack ne laisse jamais d'indice derrière lui. Simplement je ne pensais pas qu'il serait méfiant avec moi. Encore un truc de mecs, Logan aussi peut se comporter comme lui. Et si ça venait de moi? Et si je faisais fuir les autres parce que j'ai été conçue comme ça? En tout cas c'était plus facile avant quand rien ne comptait vraiment pour moi.

(We see Zack lay down on the observation bed hooked up to machines.)

( monitor clicking rapidly )

(There is a doctor looking at Zack's file. Lydecker walks in.)

LYDECKER ( sighs )

LYDECKER: Whenever you're ready.

DOCTOR: I don't recommend it. It's too soon to use psychoactives on him again. His system hasn't had time to recover.

LYDECKER: Your concerns are noted. Now let's proceed.

DOCTOR: Just give me a day or two to stabilize his condition.

(Lydecker closes Zack's file and puts it down on a tray.)

LYDECKER: Maybe you don't understand what's at stake. He knows where the x5s are. He's got it locked in his brain but I'm going to get it out.

DOCTOR: You're not going to get anything if he's dead.

LYDECKER: I'll take that risk. Do it. Do it, or I'll find someone else who will.

(The doctor injects something into Zack's arm and the graph machine hooked up starts to move. Zack's fingers move and then they calm down and the graph machine stops.)

LYDECKER ( Sighs )

(The doctor points the laser at Zack's right eye and turns it on.)

LYDECKER: Where are they, Zack? Where's Jondy? Where's Max? Tell me, and all this will be over.

(Zack has flashbacks of marching, training as soldiers and escaping during his Manticore days.)

( Marching )

( chant )

( rapid gunfire )

(We see Zack wake up in a cell. His vision is blurry and sees a shadow of Max run by. The guard checks it out and Max fights him.)

GUARD ( keys jingling )

GUARD ( grunts )

GUARD ( yelling )

(Max comes into the cell and gets Zack out. They escape.)

MAX: Zack!

ZACK: Max? How-how did... How did you...?

MAX: Shh! I'll explain later. We got to get out of here.

ZACK: Max, you shouldn't have come here.

MAX: After what you did for me I couldn't just leave you here. Think you can make it over the perimeter fence?

ZACK: If I can't, you go on without me.

(Max and Zack go into a room to hide.)

MAX: The guards will be changing shifts soon. We'll make a break for it then. Did you tell them anything? About me or... The others?

ZACK: No.

MAX: Because if they've been compromised...

ZACK: I didn't say anything.

MAX: Tell me where they are so I can warn them.

ZACK: I didn't say anything.

MAX: You sure? What's the matter, Zack?

ZACK: No. You tell me. You're not Max.

(Zack grabs Max by the neck.)

MAX: Zack...

ZACK: Who are you?!

MAX: Zack! Zack...

MAX ( Coughing )

(Zack regains clear vision and sees that the girl is NOT Max. The lights go on in the room and soldiers come in. The soldiers start beating on Zack.)

ZACK ( gasping )

ZACK ( grunts )

(The doctor runs into the room.)

DOCTOR: Leave him alone! Leave him alone! Stop!

ZACK ( Panting )

(Lydecker walks in.)

DOCTOR: I'm telling you he can't take this.

ZACK: I'll never... Tell... You... Anything.

(Zack smiles at Lydecker with blood dripping from his mouth.)

(At Logan's appartment, we see Bling wiping clean the exercise machines. Max enters the appartment with a bag.)

MAX: Hey.

BLING: Hey.

MAX: Check it out.

(Max pulls out a chicken from her bag.)

BLING: Haven't seen one of those in a while.

MAX: Scored it at the farmer's market. Thought logan might want to whip up one of his spur-of-the-moment culinary miracles. He around?

BLING: He went for a walk.

MAX: A walk?

BLING: Down by the waterfront.

BLING & MAX ( Both chuckling )

(Down by the waterfront, Logan is standing barefooted with a cane. Max walks down.)

MAX: Hey. Trespassing. Can't you read?

LOGAN: Take off your shoes, and come here.

MAX: I left you a little present back at your place. A fresh chicken.

LOGAN: Oh, wow. I see a poulet chez Cale in your future with a bottle of pre-pulse Nuits-St. George--say around... 8:00?

MAX: I was hoping you'd say that.

LOGAN: It's beautiful, isn't it?

( Wave splashes )

LOGAN: ...and it's funny. For the first time in a long time... I feel like anything... And everything is possible.

(Logan steps into the water.)

MAX: Aren't you cold?

LOGAN: Freezing... But it feels great.

(A hoverdrone flies over the area.)

HOVERDRONE VOICE: This is a restricted area. Repeat: This is a restricted area.

MAX: I hate those things.

LGOAN: Yeah. We better go.

MAX: Guess so.

LOGAN: So, I'll see you tonight?

MAX: 8:00.

LOGAN: Sharp.

MAX: I should get to work.

LOGAN: Yeah, I got to head home.

MAX: Bye.

LOGAN: Bye.

(Logan and Max go off in opposite directions. They stop and turn around and go the other way.)

MAX: Wrong way.

LOGAN: Wrong way.

(Jam Pony Headquarters)

NORMAL: How many times have I told you? You don't have a signature, you don't get paid for the run.

GUY: Oh...

(Herbal gives some papers to Normal.)

HERBAL: 225 Carrington.

NORMAL: Signature?

HERBAL: Right there.

NORMAL: Robert Marley. That's more like it.

(Original Cindy and Sketchy each roll in with a shopping cart full of Original Cindy's belongings.)

SKETCHY: Doesn't seem fair.

ORIGINAL CINDY: It's not fair, but what was Original Cindy supposed to do? They turned off my electricity, my heat, even my water.

NORMAL: Uh, you're late.

ORIGINAL CINDY: Back off. I'm going to put a smack-down on your ass.

SKETCHY: Hey, cut her a little slack, man. She just got evicted from her apartment.

(Jam Pony Locker Area)

MAX: I'm really sorry, girl. I can't help feeling responsible.

ORIGINAL CINDY: Not your fault you got some hopped-up killing machines gunning for you.

MAX: I can't believe they killed your super.

ORIGINAL CINDY: Me, neither. Not that he didn't deserve it. I mean, he was a slumlord and a weasel. Guess I can't blame the folks for wanting me out of the building for bringing in a "bad element."

MAX: First, you lose your job because of me and then your crib...

ORIGINAL CINDY: Gig was a bust; crib was a dump. Original Cindy just got to stay strong with the struggle.

MAX: Why don't you crash at my place?

ORIGINAL CINDY: Thanks, but I don't want to impose.

MAX: You're not. Kendra moved into her cop boyfriend's love nest so there's plenty of room.

ORIGINAL CINDY: You sure?

MAX: We'll move you in at lunch.

ORIGINAL CINDY: Just one question. Those superfreaks still looking for you?

MAX: That's the way I kick their butt.

ORIGINAL CINDY: What about those black helicopter boys you got on your tail?

MAX: That whole situation's pretty much chilled out.

(Montage of the streets and the people there.)

(Logan and Max are individually getting ready for dinner at their respective homes.)

MUSIC PLAYING: You act all over...

(Logan throwing clothes out of his closet. Bling walks in.)

BLING: Everything all right?

LOGAN: Yeah. Why?

BLING: Tearing through there like you lost something.

LOGAN: I'm just trying to find something to wear.

(Back at Max's appartment with Original Cindy unpacking.)

ORIGINAL CINDY: Where are you going anyway?

MAX: Over to Logan's.

ORIGINAL CINDIY: Oh. So you got a date.

(Max looking through her closet.)

LOGAN: It's not a date. She's just coming over for dinner.

BLING: Uh-huh.

LOGAN: We have dinner all the time.

BLING: Yeah, but things are different now. The gun is loaded... If you know what i mean.

MAX: No, I don't know what you mean.

ORIGINAL CINDY: I've seen the way you two look at each other.

(Max is shaving her legs.)

ORIGINAL CINDY: With him up and around now maybe you two can do something about it.

MAX: We're not like that. Besides...

(Back at Logan's appartment, Logan preparing dinner.)

LOGAN: ...Just because I was in a wheelchair doesn't mean that I couldn't have gone there if I wanted to.

BLING: I understand.

ORIGINAL CINDY: Wait. It doesn't matter whether the obstacle between you and him getting busy was physical or psychological. It's gone now.

LOGAN: And your point is...?

BLING: That's a whole new ball game... Which is why you're a nervous wreck.

LOGAN ( Chuckling )

LOGAN: I'm not nervous. Ow!

(Logan cuts himself with a knife.)

MAX: Yeah, right.

ORIGINAL CINDY: This is just one more reason I'm glad I'm a lesbian. We don't put ourselves through all this drama. After the second date, we move in together.

MAX: I'm telling you we're just a couple of friends getting together for dinner.

LOGAN: Anything more than that is a surefire way...

(Logan puts the chicken in the oven.)

LOGAN: To ruin a nice friendship.

BLING: Whatever you say but I'm clearing out of here just the same.

ORIGINAL CINDY: If you're not coming home, could you just call so i don't worry?

(We see the Manticore hallway. Zack is on the observation bed. The doctor pulls a sheet over Zack. Lydecker is there. We see a Manticore grave site with barcode tombstones. Soldiers lower Zack's coffin into the ground. The doctor and Lydecker watch on. Night falls and Zack wakes up inside the coffin.)

ZACK ( Gasps )

ZACK ( panting )

(Zack pounds on the top of the coffin and pushes his way out of the grave. He runs through the woods and sees headlights from a car. The doctor is inside the car, Zack goes towards it.)

DOCTOR: You all right? I'm sorry. It was the only way to get you out. Here. Put these on.

(The doctor gives Zack some clothes to change into.)

ZACK: Why are you helping me?

DOCTOR: So maybe I can live with myself.

(Zack gets into the car and they drive off.)

DOCTOR: I'll get you to the state line, then you're on your own. Just take it.

(The doctors hands over some money to Zack.)

( Helicopter approaching )

(We hear gunfire and the car swirls. Zack gets out and sees Manticore hummers approaching. He runs.)

DOCTOR: Run! Run!

( Dogs barking )

( gunfire )

(The doctor gets shot.)

DOCTOR: Go!

SOLDIER: All teams, he's on foot heading southeast from rally point seven.

(At Logan's appartment, Logan is lighting the candles and puts down his cane to open the door for Max.)

( Doorbell rings )

MAX: Hey.

LOGAN: Hey.

(Logan and Max stare at each other.)

LOGAN: Come on in.

(Zack is at a payphone making a call.)

(Back at Max's appartment, Original Cindy putting up a Zena poster.)

( Music playing )

( phone rings )

ORIGINAL CINDY: Yeah.

ZACK: Max?

ORIGINAL CINDY: Who is this?

(At Logan's appartment, Logan and Max are sitting by the counter with an awkward silence and drinking wine.)

LOGAN: So...

MAX: So...

LOGAN: So...

MAX: So...

OVEN ( Beeping )

LOGAN: Dinner.

(Logan gets the chicken.)

( Oven door opens )

LOGAN: Oh, no.

(Max walks over to see an uncooked chicken.)

MAX: Chicken tartare?

(Logan and Max both laugh.)

LOGAN: That's so wrong.

( Phone rings )

LOGAN: Can you get that?

MAX: Yeah. Turn the oven on.

LOGAN: Oh.

(Max answers the phone.)

MAX: Hello?

ZACK: Max.

MAX: Zack?

ZACK: I need you.

(Max gets off the phone and gets ready to leave.)

MAX: He's hiding in the woods near Manticore. I have to get to him before they find him.

LOGAN: No, those woods are going to be crawling with Lydecker's men.

MAX: I'm going, Logan. I owe it to him.

LOGAN: Okay.

(Logan slams the door close as Max tries to get out.)

LOGAN: Say you make it past the sector checkpoint. Say you even manage to get to him. What makes you think you can slip through a Manticore dragnet and get back out?

MAX: We did it once and we were just kids then.

(Logan closes the door again as Max tries to leave.)

LOGAN: What if it's a trap? What if Zack's been turned?

MAX: Zack turned? You don't know him at all, do you?

(Logan closes the door again as Max tries to leave.)

LOGAN: I am not letting you do this.

MAX: Don't get me wrong. Nobody's gladder than me that you're on your feet, but--reality check--I could still kick your ass.

(Logan lets Max go.)

(Max gets through a checkpoint area and hiding inside a truck rig full of cars. Daylight comes and the truck gets stopped at another checkpoint.)

SECTOR POLICE: Contraband check. Shut her down. We got to search the whole rig.

( Motorcycle engine starts )

(Max leaps over the checkpoint on her Ninja. She then hides her bike in the forest greens and runs through it. Manticore soldiers are partrolling throughout the area. Max goes into a cave.)

MAX ( quietly ): Zack? Zack.

(Zack holds Max around her neck.)

MAX: Zack, it's me.

ZACK: What are you doing here?

MAX: You're hurting me.

ZACK: He sent you.

MAX: What are you talking about? You called me.

ZACK: You're trying to trick me.

MAX: I'm not trying to trick you. Lydecker's men are all over the place. We've got to get out of here.

ZACK: He sent you here to bring me back but it's not going to work. You've been turned. You're a threat to the others.

MAX ( Choking ): Zack...

(Max flips Zack over on the ground.)

MAX: Don't move.

ZACK: I knew it. I knew you were one of them.

MAX: If that were true, this would be the part where I call in a tac-team and turn you over to Lydecker. But it's not true. I'm here because you asked me to come.

(Zack starts crying.)

ZACK: Max...

MAX: Shh. It's okay. Everything's going to be all right. We'll stay here till it gets dark then I'm going to get you out of here. What did they do to you?

ZACK: I didn't tell them anything, Max--about you or any of the others.

MAX: If they used psychoactives on you, you can't be sure of anything.

ZACK: I couldn't have said anything, Max, because I don't know anything. I made myself forget the way that they taught us to.

(Max flashes back to her Manticore training days and the psychoactives they used on her.)

Lydecker: No one can resist torture indefinitely. Not even you. The mind is infinitely pliable. You will reveal what you know.

Lydecker: Memories can be buried... Obfuscated.

Young Max: 7-3-7-1-1-9...

Lydecker: You can learn to forget what you know. Your own name... Your own barcode...

Young Max: 5-4-9-7-4-2-3-5-6-9-4...

Lydecker: ...By deliberately flooding your mind with disinformation. You can so confuse your memory that you can't reveal the truth. Is this your barcode? Answer me.

(Max's flashback ends.)

ZACK: I made myself forget. To protect you. To protect all of you.

MAX: It's okay. It's over.

ZACK: No. No, it's not. I'm the only one who knew. The only one. I've got to remember so that I can protect them.

MAX: You will. You called me, right? You remembered my number.

ZACK: It's not the same.

MAX: Yes, you can do it if you try.

ZACK: No, it's different with you.

ZACK ( Breathing heavily )

ZACK: I mean, how could I forget... A single thing about you? How could I?

( Helicopter approaching )

MAX: Better check it out. Make sure we're okay in here. You stay put.

(Max leaves and Zack lies down. Zack has flashbacks of psychoactives, Manticore, escaping, and everything that has happened so far to the x5s.)

ZACK ( Gasps )

(Max returns. Zack wakes up.)

MAX: It's me.

ZACK: It's been a long time since I've been able to let my guard down long enough to sleep.

ZACK ( Sighs )

ZACK: ...probably wouldn't bother you. You never slept much anyway.

MAX: Me and Jondy. We must have shark DNA in us or something. Just don't need to sleep.

ZACK: That's why she doesn't mind working nights. In a bar. In Portland. No, wait. That's Tinga. Jondy lives in San Francisco.

MAX: Go on.

ZACK: She lives right near the golden gate.

MAX: What about Tinga? You said she lives in Portland.

ZACK: Works at... A bakery. You should see how long her hair's gotten. It's like she hasn't cut it since the escape.

MAX: And Zane, where does he live?

ZACK: In L.A. He's a mechanic. He's got a dog. A German shepherd... Scary looking--like we had back in Manticore--but sweet.

MAX: Keep going. You're doing great.

(Logan's appartment. Logan is calling Max's pager.)

OPERATOR: The subscriber you are trying to page is out of service range. Please try...

BLING: Still can't get ahold of her, huh? I'm headed to the market. You need anything?

LOGAN: No, thanks.

(Bling leaves. Logan walks over to the counter and barely falls. His legs are acting up and are shaking.)

LOGAN ( Gasping )

(Back in the cave.)

MAX: Tell me about Krit. What's he up to?

ZACK: Krit?

( Water trickling )

ZACK: I don't know.

MAX: It's okay.

ZACK: I-I can't remember.

MAX: It's all right. It'll come back.

ZACK: I saw Brin back at Manticore.

MAX: We're going to get her out of there someday, you and me. You should get some rest. It won't be dark for awhile yet.

ZACK: Thanks, Maxie... For coming to get me, I mean.

MAX: It's the least I can do after what you've done for me.

ZACK: Lydecker tried to trick me into thinking that you'd come for me before.

MAX: What do you mean? Trick you how?

ZACK: Shot me up with God knows what. Sent someone in pretending to be like you. Really messed with my head. So tired.

MAX: It's okay. Sleep.

(Zack sleeps.)

MAX: I'm going to head up the road. There's a gas station nearby. I'll get us some food. If I don't come back by sun down, keep going. Find the others.

(Max is running through the woods. She spots an undercover Manticore man at the gas station and listens in to his radio.)

ATTENDANT: We're in position and standing by. There's still no sign of her.

( Water trickling )

(Lydecker, the doctor, and a Manticore man is inside a van with computers.)

LYDECKER (to walkie-talkie): Has she shown yet?

ATTENDANT: Negative.

DOCTOR: What do you think he'll do when she doesn't show up?

LYDECKER: He'll do what she said to do. They'll assume that she's been captured and move long and try to find the others.

( Radio static )

LYDECKER: What's wrong with the audio?

MAN: It shouldn't be breaking up like that, I'm still getting a strong GPS signal. He's moving.

(On the computer screen, there is map with the x5 target moving.

LYDECKER (to walkie-talkie): Any sign of her yet?

ATTENDANT: Negative.

LYDECKER: This is taking too long. Something's wrong.

LYDECKER (to walkie-talkie): All units, this is command. We're bringing them in. He's moving south... Along the stream.

(The soldiers are moving along the stream. Max and Zack are moving along the stream.)

MAN: He stopped.

LYDECKER (to walkie-talkie): Delta, this is control. Target is south your position, 1-7-5 degrees.

(Soldiers are by the stream at the GPS location.)

SOLDIER: Roger, control. We're moving in.

TAC OFFICER: Control, this delta team. We're on the target area. There's no sign of them, over.

LYDECKER (to walkie-talkie): Well, that's impossible. He's right where you are.

(Lydecker is looking at the tracking screen.)

SOLDIER: Sir!

( Clanking sounds )

(A soldier pulls out a log with a transmitter wrapped around it from the stream.)

SOLDIER: The transmitter.

LYDECKER (to walkie-talkie): Say again?

SOLDIER: He's pulled it out. Used it as a decoy.

LYDECKER ( Sighs )

(Max and Zack getting the Ninja out of the woods.)

ZACK: Max... They were listening to us the whole time.

MAX: They heard everything you told me about where the others are?

ZACK: I got to warn them.

MAX: We've got to get out of here first.

( Motorcycle engine running )

(Max and Zack ride off.)

(Logan's appartment)

MAX: It was a trick. Lydecker let him escape so he'd lead him to the others.

ZACK: I compromised the others. I jeopardized everything!

LOGAN: What do you mean? How?

ZACK: By opening... My big mouth.

LOGAN: It's a long story.

(Lydecker and his people are listening to the taped conversation that Zack had with Max about the x5.)

ZACK'S VOICE: Works at... A bakery. You should see how long her hair's gotten. It's like she hasn't cut it since the escape.

LYDECKER: He's going to try to warn them... And let they know they've been compromised. We're going to have to move on this and we're going to have to move fast.

(Back at Logan's appartment.)

MAX: You said Tinga worked at a bakery in Portland. Which one?

ZACK: I don't know.

MAX: What about Zane? Where did he work? How did you stay in touch with him, Zack?

ZACK: The contact number. I set up a voice... Mailbox so they could check in with me.

MAX: And if you needed to reach one of them?

ZACK: I'd call.

MAX: Jondy? Did you call her? What was her number?

ZACK: I don't know.

MAX: Think, Zack. Her life depends on it.

ZACK: Don't you think I know that by now?!

LOGAN: Just give him some time, Max.

MAX: We don't have time. It could already be too late to save them. Sorry, it's not your fault. It's just... There has to be a way to warn them.

LOGAN: Maybe there is.

(Normal is at his Jam Pony Headquarters office watching TV at night. We can here the TV program.)

( Siren blaring )

Man: What's going on?

Cop: What happened to your knee?

Man: I fell chasing a guy.

NORMAL: Yeah, right, you sissy freak.

Cop 1: Stand over here for me.

Cop 2: Stand still for me.

NORMAL: Arrest him already. He's a reprobate.

Cop: Come here. Wait a minute.

NORMAL: Don't turn your back on a peace officer, you weenie.

(Eyes Only streaming bulletin interrupts the program.)

EYES ONLY: Do not attempt to adjust your set. This is a streaming freedom video bulletin.

NORMAL ( Yells )

EYES ONLY: This cable hack cannot be traced it cannot be stopped and it is the only free voice left in this city. This is a message to those known as x5. You've been compromised. You're in danger. You know what to do.

(The broadcast is streamed throughout the country.)

(At a garage)

GUY: Hey, uh, Zane, hand me that 3/16th, will ya?

EYES ONLY: I repeat you've been compromised.

GUY: Zane?

EYES ONLY: You know what to do.

GUY: Zane?

(Max and Zack are watching Logan deliver this message.)

EYES ONLY: This message will repeat every hour on the hour until each of you has checked in.

LOGAN: Now we wait and see who calls into the contact number.

MAX: Eyes only just made himself another enemy.

LOGAN: Well, it was getting a little quiet around here.

(Lydecker's van)

MAN: This "eyes only" is a pain-in-the-ass do-gooder, but smart.

LYDECKER: But the question is, why is he trying to help... My kids?

MAN: I don't know. It's not the sort of thing he usually gets into.

LYDECKER: When all of this is over... I want you to find out who this clown is.

(Logan's appartment)

ZACK: Zane, Syl and Krit have all called in. They're already on the move.

MAX: That just leaves Tinga and Jondy.

ZACK: You sure I didn't blab about the others while Lydecker was listening?

MAX: Believe me, I'd remember. So, how come you didn't give me this contact number of yours so I could find you if I needed to?

ZACK: You know why.

MAX: Because I haven't been a good little soldier and followed orders?

ZACK: Something like that.

MAX: Guess I won't be invited to the next x5 reunion.

ZACK ( Sighs )

ZACK: You're too reckless, Max. I couldn't risk giving it to you. What if you got caught and Lydecker got it out of you?

MAX: I'm too much of a liability to be trusted, is that it?

ZACK: If you want to get on board with the way I do things it's not too late. First step though is leaving Seattle. I didn't think so. Especially not now.

MAX: What are you talking about?

ZACK: I'm talking about miracle boy over there.

(At Lydecker's place, Lydecker is looking at a file with pictures of the x5 kids.)

LYDECKER ( Sighs )

MAN: We got a lead on the girl in Portland.

LYDECKER: Good. Have him send us a chopper ASAP. I'm going to take care of this one myself.

(Logan's appartment)

ZACK: Just got a message from Tinga. Lydecker's onto her and she needs our help.

(We see Tinga running around an area in Portland. Manticore hummers are approaching. Tinga hides and the soldiers spread out.)

( Distant banging sounds )

( vehicle approaching )

(Lydecker gets out of the vehicle.)

LYDECKER: Good job.

LYDECKER ( Sighs )

LYDECKER: What's the sit-rep?

SOLDIER: She was last seen headed this way. We've secured the area. I've got men posted all along the perimeter. She's in here somewhere.

LYDECKER: Do you know what she looks like?

SOLDIER: From when she applied for work at the bakery.

(The soldier shows Lydecker the picture of Tinga.)

LYDECKER: All right, I want a point-to-point search with tazers only. I want her alive.

(Tinga is hiding inside a bus.)

TINGA ( Heavy breathing )

TINGA: Come on, Zack. Where are you?

(Outside the bus, soldiers are showing Tinga's picture around and asking people if they've seen her.)

( Footsteps approaching )

(Manticore soldier looks inside the bus with a flashlight.)

SOLDIER: There she is!

(The soldier shines the light on Tinga.)

TAC OFFICER (on walkie-talkie): She's moving west.

LYDECKER (on walkie-talkie): Delta team, converge on target. Alpha team, establish a perimeter.

(Tinga kicks down and hits a Manticore soldier.)

SOLDIER ( Grunts and groans )

TAC OFFICER: Delta team to command.

LYDECKER (on walkie-talkie): Go ahead.

TAC OFFICER (on walkie-talkie): We have the subject in sight and are moving to subdue.

LYDECKER (on walkie-talkie): All right, just remember, I want her alive.

(Max and Zack come to Tinga's rescue and helps her kick butt. Manticore soldiers surround the trio. One by one, the soldiers get knocked off. Moments later, Lydecker arrives at the scene to find all his men down. Max, Tinga, and Zack flee the scene and are running on top of parked buses. They get into Logan's Aztek when he arrives and they drive off.)

(Logan, Max, and Tinga watch Zack hot wire a vehicle.) LOGAN: Is everybody in your family a thief?

ZACK: Hit it.

( Engine turns )

ZACK: How much in the tank?

TINGA: Three-quarters. Ought to be enough to get us to the Canadian border.

(Zack gets into the vehicle and looks at Max.)

ZACK: Should I even ask? Let's go.

TINGA (to Max): What about you?

ZACK: She's going back to Seattle.

TINGA: You're not coming with us?

ZACK: Don't bother.

TINGA: Lydecker's...

ZACK: I said, don't bother.

TINGA: You take care of yourself, baby sister.

MAX: You, too.

(Max and Tinga hug.)

ZACK: Thanks for getting me out.

MAX: Guess this makes us even.

ZACK: Guess so. Let's hope miracles come in two because you're going to need one to keep from getting caught.

(Tinga and Zack drive off.)

(Lydecker is in his car by the water, another vehicle approaches.)

LYDECKER: Still smoking?

MAN: You lost him, Deck.

LYDECKER: It was a calculated risk. The information we got on the other x5s more than made up for losing him.

MAN: If you say so.

LYDECKER: They were underground and we forced them out in the open. Made them go on the run. No one on the run can avoid leaving a trail. Not even my kids.

MAN: The committee has decided that the x5 situation needs to be resolved. You are hereby authorized to use whatever means necessary to see that it is.

LYDECKER: Am I to understand that to include using deadly force?

MAN: If that's what it takes.

LYDECKER: I thought we wanted to keep them alive.

MAN: The committee wants this situation resolved.

LYDECKER: You know i'm going to have to go up the line on this don't you?

MAN: Don't bother. She signed the directive.

LYDECKER ( Laughs )

MAN: She asked me to pass on a personal message: If you have a problem executing the order... She'll find somebody else to do it.

LYDECKER: That won't be necessary.

MAN: I didn't think it would be.

(Logan's appartment)

MAX: She looks just like I remember. I wish I could have spent more time with her, though. Found out what her life's been like... What she's been up to.

LOGAN: Maybe after everything settles down you two can hook up.

MAX: How?

(Logan holds up the phone.)

LOGAN: Last number dialed--Zack's contact number.

MAX: Oh! I can't believe it. He usually covers his tracks way better than this.

LOGAN: You'd think, huh?

MAX: Thanks. Got anything to eat?

LOGAN: Why don't you go see for yourself?

MAX ( Giggles )

(Max opens the fridge. Logan's legs give him trouble again. He has a hard time trying to hold on to the counter to stand back up.)

MAX: Got a half a poulet chez Cale. Some leafy green stuff. Mashed potatoes. What do you say we have that dinner? Promise I won't bail on you this time.

LOGAN: Uh... I have to take a rain check. I've got some work to do.

MAX: Oh, okay.

LOGAN: You can take it with you, if you want.

MAX: No, I'll get something on the way home.

LOGAN: Okay, night.

( Door slams )

(Logan struggles to stand.)

LOGAN ( groans )

(Max at a payphone.)

( phone rings )

OPERATOR: The number you have reached is not in service at this time and there is no new number. Please be sure you have checked the telephone directory for the right number and you are dialing correctly...

(Max on top of the Space Needle, reflecting.)

MAX: Guess I shouldn't be surprised. I mean, it's like I said he usually covers his tracks pretty good. I just didn't think he'd cover them from me. Must be a guy thing 'cause Logan can cover pretty good. Maybe it's me. Maybe there's something in the way i'm made that turns people away. All I know is it was easier before when I just didn't give a damn about anything.
